What does this trip offer you? Fabulous rainforest and crater scenery; a thrilling walk across a crater floor; and a visit to the site from which spewed the highest and hottest lava fountain ever recorded in Hawaiian history. If you have time for only one hike in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, this should be it. Perhaps the biggest challenge on this hike is keeping yourself moving because every few steps will reveal yet another viewpoint where you just have to stop and take one more picture.
Very cool…how often do you get to walk over a crater that is still steaming and collapsing! Most of the trail was smooth and paved. Walking through Ohia and Fern forest which cools you off, there are a couple of looks outs and rest areas along the way. The crater itself is full of steam vents, but beware they are sulfur vents, not recommended for people with respiratory problems. As you are walking along the crater there are spots that will feel warmer than others – take lots of water.
