The spiral stairs, like the yellow main gate, are designed so that we feel safe at night sleeping with all the doors open to the deck. Not that Puako has a high crime rate – it doesn’t – but it adds a nice sense of security.
It has two gates, the one in the railing and the one across the top of it. The gate across the top has small combination locks and the combinations are all the same: 2-2-2
The gate on the side has its own key (purple, if your keys are color coded yellow, green and purple).
Unfortunately the design of the gates was an afterthought and they conflict the windows above it and the doors next to it. Don’t ask.
…but this is how it looks when opened. The top gate makes a teepee on top and, yes it, hits the bathroom window above it.
