The house has a lot of doors. Its like a big tent.
There are sixteen sets of french doors. Each set has a door with a knob and a door pinned to the sill but they can both be opened. You can open both or leave one side closed. You can open as many or as few as you want. They are bamboo and glass and they all lock and unlock with the same key.
Please always keep the doors bolted into the deck when opened. Puako frequently has wind and it can come up unexpectedly.
BECAUSE THESE BOLTS CAN SEEM VERY DIFFICULT, WE ARE PROVIDING RIDICULOUSLY DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS. THERE ARE MANY DOORS AND THIS CAN HELP YOU AVOID NEEDLESS FRUSTRATION.
- When both doors are closed and locked, one door latches with pins at the top and bottom of the doorframe. The other door latches into it with its door knob and lock. Each door also has a large, brown, steel L bolt for holding the door open. This is how you will find the doors when you arrive.
- The large, brown, steel L bolt is only for holding the door open securely on the deck. It extends down into holes drilled in the deck. This bolt is NOT used when a door is in its closed, locked position; instead it rides on top of its hardware fitting and remains above the doorsill, as shown below:
The tricky part is that the bolt has two tiny teeth, or ear flanges, on its side, about an inch apart, that define upper, middle, and lower positions for the bolt on the door. You have to align them with the slot so they will slide through, allowing the bolt to either drop into the deck or to be lifted up higher than the door sill.
You need to let the bolt go all the way down through the bracket to stab it into the deck and you need to raise it all the way back up, both ears above the bracket, to store it in the upper position. Play with it, you’ll see its easy.
But a good tip: the bolts need to be positioned in the uppermost position before closing the door. If the bolt is in the middle position, it will bang against weather stripping and prevent the door from closing.
Be sure both metal ear flanges are above the bracket when you want to close a door.
Yes, any idiot may be able to figure these tips out and they may seem excessive but when you have sixteen times two doors, you want to make it as easy as possible.
